Raweya, a 15-year-old girl from a destitute rural area in Egypt, has a dream. Some day she will be a doctor. But obstacles loom large. Poverty, as overwhelming as it can be, is just one among many. Thanks to an education initiative, she now attends a community school, something that was unthinkable for girls in the past.

Reacting to a global monitoring report that shows most countries are not on track to meet a 2005 goal for gender parity in education, UNICEF has said that it was not too late for governments to launch “credible efforts” to get more girls into school.

Girls attending secondary school in Nyanga Township, Zimbabwe are attracting unwanted attention from soldiers from a nearby army training camp that houses recruits from across Africa. CAMFED has launched an appeal to build a hostel near to the school that will house them in supervised and safe accommodation during term time.

Three years ago in Dakar (Senegal), more than 160 countries attending the World Education Forum pledged to achieve gender parity in education - equal enrolments for boys and girls - by the year 2005. According to the Education for All Global Monitoring Report 2003/2004, however, many of them are unlikely to meet that target.
